In 1982, Julie Moss became worldwide famous during the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon, in which she competed as part of her research for her exercise physiology thesis. At approximately two miles before the finish line, she came severely dehydrated. She staggered and crawled towards the end of the course, only to be passed moments before the finish line by Kathleen McCartney. Her struggle to finish the Ironman was broadcasted live around the world by ABC Sports, and provided inspiration to many….

They’re so thin they’d snap if you shagged them
completely agree… Of course that would be an amazing altruistic act, but once your systems start shutting down you are in a battle for survival with just the finishing line in your mind.
The book “Mastery” by Leonard brought me here.
Well, let’s see. McCartney swam 2,4 miles, then rode the bike 112 miles and on top of that she ran a marathon. And THEN she also should be able to realize that her opponent has collapsed on the road and she should’ve helped her?
Dude, let’s see how helpful YOU would be after an Ironman race…
Just look at the video again, McCartney didn’t even realize at first that she had won…
“the answer”? People don’t do marathons and triathlons to find “the answer”. They do it to get laid!
I saw that race. Trully amazing!
She has really inspired me
She inspired me to wipe after every dump!
but McCartney didnt realise she’d won, plus julie hadnt the fitness to cross the line, she didnt deserve to win.
hahahahaha! LOL!
Everyone (Including McCartney) knows who REALLY won that race in every way, Julie Moss. If McCartney was a TRUE athlete and not someone looking to ‘win win win’ she would have either conceded or helped her across. Julie was and is the true champion. Let’s put it this way, who will always be remembered and who will always be mentioned afterward and only as an afterthought?
She is abolutey AWESOME!!!
She inspired the whole Triahtlon Scene!!!
Do they really find the answer though by doing these things?
This girl has the biggest heart, the biggest determination I have ever seen. NO MATTER HOW, but she finish, never give up, ever, even when she could ask for assistance. I don’t know if she was able to hear the peope arround nevertheless the heart is the only way to push you beyond your fisical limits. No matter what happend after that ( injuries, pain or so) will be covered by the enormous and great feeling of selfesteem.
omg man she is my hero I actually cried a litlle when she crossed the finish line. How inspiring.
probably should’ve removed that hat
@GustaboCla: Well it depends on the person’s perspective,,,I won;t say one thing is wrong and the other thing is correct. By the way, this argument does not apply here as Julie was not in a fatal condition. At most, she would ended up putting her legs in a cast for 1 year or may be surgery. It was worth taking risk.
Ah it’s clear who Steve Prefontaine would have called the winner, ‘”A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more. “
OK, but if you’re close to the top of the Everest and starts to feel fatally breathless, should you go back to the base of the mountain or should you try to reach the top even so?
As someone mentioned above “Pain is temporary, failure lasts forever”
I bet you wonder why people climbed Mount Everest, why someone went to Moon, why someone dares to swim across the ocean
Let me tell you why..because these people wonder whats the purpose of their life and they find an answer.
Well, if she had died, it would last forever.
